A Laptop Specifications Guide (for dummies by a dummy)

This is a guide to learn more about laptop specifications for dummies. Because I’m a dummy and I needed this.

Companies that make Laptops:

Let’s first check out a few companies that are in the laptop game.

Work Laptops:

Gaming Laptops:

Laptop Specifications:

Laptop specifications are important to understand the features, limitations, and capabilities of the device you have chosen.

1. Processor

2. RAM

3. Hard Drive

4. Screen Resolution

5. Graphics

6. Screen size

7. USB ports

8. Battery Life

PROCESSOR:

What is a laptop processor?

A laptop processor is basically the CPU (Central Processing Unit) of your laptop.

What is the speed of a processor?

The speed determines how fast the processor can interpret instructions. Faster the speed, faster your laptop works, thus leading to better performance.

How is the speed measured?

The speed is measured in gigahertz (GHz) or megahertz (MHz). It is actually a measure of frequency, i.e. the number of cycles per second. One GHz means that 10^9 cycles per second are executed by the processor while one MHz means 10^6 cycles per second are executed.

Which are the popular processors?

Intel is the leading company that provides laptop processors. Most laptops make use of IntelCORE processors.

RAM (Random Access Memory)

What is RAM?

RAM is a short term memory storage area which is accessible to the processor. The processor uses it according to its requirement.

Are RAM and the hard drive the same?

No, the RAM stores volatile memory i.e. once the computer is switched off, it loses the memory. A hard drive is a permanent way to store data.

How is Ram measured?

RAM is generally measured in a unit of data known as gigabytes. To understand what a byte is, take a look at the following images.

HARD DRIVE:

What is the hard drive?

It is the main unit in which data can be stored permanently. Like Ram, the storage space is measured in mega, Giga, and terabytes. More bytes, more storage space.

SCREEN RESOLUTION:

What is screen resolution?

The maximum amount of pixels in horizontal rows and vertical columns on the screen.

For example, if the resolution is expressed as 1920 × 1080 it means, there are 1980 pixels horizontally and 1080 pixels vertically.

More pixels mean better resolution i.e. the quality of the image would be better.

GRAPHICS:

Laptop graphics quality (i.e. clarity of images and design) depends on the screen resolution. The better the resolution, the better the graphics.

SCREEN SIZE:

Screen size is basically the area of the screen which displays visual information.

USB PORTS:

USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports are a part of laptops. You can connect devices such as pen drives, phones, cameras through a USB wire. The number of ports differs from laptop to laptop. Depending on your usage, you can select the appropriate one.

BATTERY LIFE:

It’s the number of hours your laptop can work with a fully charged battery after it has been unplugged. The average battery life is between 4-8 hours. Battery life capacity depends on the model of your laptop and may decrease over time.

In the rock age, the dog was man's best friend. Today, we've made our own best friend, the computer. It's important to know things about your BFF. Does it know things about you too?
